Which GPS should you buy for your grandmother?

It’s according to what your grandmother is going to use it for.

Don’t think you have to be a computer geek to benefit from car GPS devices. On the contrary, user interfaces for GPS systems are very intuitive. You have icons on a touch screen that you press, which lead you to the function you’re interested in.

What I would be most concerned about is the quality of the device. The last thing I would want to happen to my grandmother (or myself for that matter) is to be in an unfamiliar part of town and have the device lock up or quit. So, with that in mind, personally, I would go for one of the leading brands.

The three leading makers of car GPS systems are Garmin, Tom Tom, and Magellan. Magellan has a really easy to use interface. Tom Tom’s screen is one of the best, and, although Garmins have a lot of features and an interface with a few layers to it, it’s so well thought out that you can use it without ever looking at the instructions.

Either of these three makers won’t steer you wrong. What you need to be more concerned about is the features your grandmother needs.

Grandmothers have changed. Now, they’re driving on trips alone, talking on their cell phones while driving through busy urban interchanges, and listening to Aerosmith on their iPods.

Well, maybe not…maybe Travis Tritt. But you get my drift.

What you need to look at are the features available and how much money you want to spend.

Magellans are slightly less costly than Garmins for the same features. The Tom Tom One, 3rd Edition is a steal at it’s current price (around $200). Garmin is the top of the line, though. They sell half the GPS devices sold in the world and their’s a reason why.
